Photoshop's High Pass sharpening is a great alternative to Unsharp Mask when you just want to sharpen the Bolder Contrasting edges of an image without sharpening the smaller digital noise artifacts or worsening the complexion on a portrait.  The image takes on a "crisper" look.

1.  Duplicate your Background Layer - Ensure it is the TOP Layer

3.  Click:  Filter  >  Other  > High Pass

2.  Change the Blending Mode of this new layer to Soft Light

3.  Use a Radius from .2 to 10 depending on the result required and image size.  As you increase the Radius, you will see more of the edges that the filter will work on appear.

4.  Click on OK and Change the Opacity of the High Pass layer to taste.

The Blending Mode of this layer can also be changed to Overlay, Hard Light, Vivid Light, or Linear Light for additional effect.

*   An added benefit of this technique is that it does not produce sharpening halos!
